Mac So Loud at Full Volume? Get Finer Volume Control
Some Macs have surprisingly loud speakers for their size. Moderate volume levels can be genuinely loud, especially in a quiet room, late at night or with sensitive headphones. The gap between "comfortable" and "too much" is sometimes one or two volume steps.
Why the volume steps feel too coarse
macOS has 16 volume steps on the keyboard. On loud speakers or sensitive headphones, a single step can be a big jump: from "just right" to "too loud" with one tap.
Built-in fix: quarter-step volume
Hold Option + Shift and press volume up or down. Each press changes the volume by a quarter of a normal step, giving you 64 levels instead of 16. That makes it much easier to find the exact level you want.
It's one of the most useful Mac audio tricks that most people don't know about.
The deeper problem: one slider for everything
Even with 64 levels, one slider still controls every app. Set the volume low enough for comfortable notification sounds and your music may be too quiet. Set it for music and a notification ping may make you jump.
Different sources need different volumes. Notifications should be subtle, music present, calls clear, browser video moderate. One slider can't serve all of these well.
Per-app volume for precise control
SoundDial gives each running app its own volume slider in the menu bar, from 0% up to 200%, in 1% steps. Lowering one app doesn't touch the others. That's per-app volume control.
Set your system volume to a moderate base level, then tune each app:
- Spotify: 35%, a comfortable background level
- Slack: 12%, a subtle notification ping
- Zoom: 85%, clear call audio without being overwhelming
- Safari: 45%, moderate video playback
This way no single source is "too loud". Each one sits at its own level, all at the same system volume. If one app is too quiet instead, you can boost it above 100% without raising the rest.
